Let's make clubhouse in Figma. Only have a few invites to Clubhouse, so if you need/want access, let me know and we'll try to get one. Otherwise, we'll have screenshots to go off of in the session.
This session will also be hosting simultaneously on Clubhouse... no idea how that will go but it's worth a shot.

NFTs have caught the crypto world by storm so I figured this week we could remake Foundation.app together and try to figure out if NFTs are the biggest thing ever or just keep being confused about them.

Last week we didn't make it as far as we could have and the group requested another session! Also... I forgot to record it so I'll get another shot.

Let's make the Robinhood app together! This week we'll start by looking not just at the UI, but also taking a look at how to document the Information Architecture and primary "buy a stock" user flow. Maybe we'll find some issues with that flow that could be fixed as well, who knows.Ā

Forgot I made this template a while ago while at Asurion. It's similar to the Figtut I did a few weeks ago, but this file is meant to be more standalone and interactive whereas the talk was, well, a talk.Ā

I mean... what else am I supposed to use? The masks in Figma are frustrating, I'll admit, but once you get the hang of them it's not too bad. Plus, all of the plugins make this stuff easier in a lot of ways that what it is in Photoshop, surprisingly enough.

For context, we're renovating a 1973 Travco RV. Right now we're working through the interior colors and layout.Ā

When Asurion first migrated to Figma in 2019, I decided to figure out how much that switch would cost in licenses vs what we were using at that time.Ā
However, Figma didnāt just replace one tool. It replaced pretty much all of them in our āDesign Stackā. Sketch for UI, Invision for prototyping and collaboration, Zeplin for handoff, and Abstract for version control.Ā
So answering the question āIs Figma cheaper?ā wasnāt clear cut, to say the least. To answer it, I decided to make a mega spreadsheet of all of the design tools at the time, all of their costs, all of their tiers, and all of their features. I wanted to identify where Figma would replace and where it would fall short. I also wanted to see how those costs would affect us when we took into account their free viewer tier of pricing.Ā
Hereās what that looked like:

Hereās what that looked like:
The first sheet help the tiers and pricing, the second calculated net cost and compared it to different configurations.Ā
All of that was great, and we found that Figma, for us at that time, would result in a net savings of almost $20k/year when other contracts were ended.
But that spreadsheet was a bit of a mess, so later that year I built a new version in Coda that anyone could use and it wouldnāt break if I shared it. Then I never shared it.

Letās draw Bill Murrayā¦
Well. Letās see how far we get with drawing Bill Murray in 2 hours. This session will be a lot of pen tool, pencil tool, layer effects, masks, plugins, and cover the artistic side of Figma.
Watch the recording š and also check out the transcript on Descript to make it easier to follow along and jump around: https://share.descript.com/view/Wcxl82wgOye

Letās make the Doordash iOS app this week. Lots of cool parts of it that will help us get into some of the more tricky prototyping features. This one should take the full 2 hours Iād think, but feel free to only come for part of it if thatās all you have on your calendar.Ā
